Spirit is the leader of a wild herd of mustangs and he loves exploring his homeland. When he is captured by soldiers and forced to become a draught horse, he fights back with courage and determination. He is aided by his beloved herd and a Native American boy named Little Creek.

The film was produced by DreamWorks Animation and was released in June of 2021. It took nine months to design and had a total of 700 background elements per frame. The animators also used real horse vocalizations instead of computer generated ones. The sound designer recorded the horses at a stable in California.

During the scene where Spirit and Rain chase the cavalry men, the foals’ facial markings disappear. It was due to a technical error that was later fixed. The director of the movie, Kelly Asbury, was a skilled artist with over thirty years of experience. The production team took a four-day trip to the western United States to view scenic locations for the film.

The first time that Spirit sees Rain, he is taken by her beauty and she tries to win his heart. But he is still angry at being forcefully ripped away from his herd and herdmate Esperanza. He lashes out at her, which prompts Little Creek to come and defend his friend. Little Creek then comes up with the idea of tying Spirit and Rain together with rope. He then asks them to show him their world while he goes back home.

In one of the scenes in the movie, the foals are playing in the water. Then, Spirit drinks the water by licking it with his tongue. But it isn’t really how horses drink. They actually suck the water into their mouths.

The horse stallions in the movie are all based on real horses. However, the most notable character is Spirit, who was based on Donner, a mustang that lived from 1995 to 1998. The real Donner was part of the Return to Freedom wild horse sanctuary.
