Horses are an incredibly beautiful creature, but drawing them can be intimidating for beginners. This article will teach you how to draw a horse head from different angles: side, 3/4 view, and front. It will also explain how to make your drawings more realistic by adding details like eyelashes and a mane.
The first step is to find a reference photo of a horse that you like the look of. This can be a picture from the internet or even your own personal photos. When looking for a photo to use, try to find one that is clear and in focus. Also, be sure to look for a picture that shows the whole horse so you can get a better idea of its size and proportions.
Once you have found a photo that you like the look of, start by lightly sketching out the basic shapes of the horse’s head on your paper. You will want to keep this sketch fairly light because you will be going over it with ink later on. Next, draw a long oval-like shape for the nose and a small circle for the mouth. It’s important to keep in mind that horses have very large eyes so be sure to leave room for them when you draw the nose and mouth.
Now it’s time to add some more detail. Start by drawing a curve from the top of the eye socket down to the bottom of the muzzle. Most horses have a slightly concave curve, but this can be changed depending on the breed of horse that you’re trying to draw. This is one of the most important areas in terms of determining the overall appearance of the horse’s face.
Next, you will need to add the horse’s ears. You can either do this freehand or, if you’re using a pen with a fine point, use a protractor to help you draw the shape of the ears correctly. Once you have the ears drawn, move on to the eyes. These are another area where it’s important to remember that horses have very large eyes, so be sure to leave plenty of room for them when you draw the circles for the eyes.
Finally, you will need to add the horse’s mane. Most domestic horses have their manes trimmed so that it lies flat on the right side of their neck, but there are some horses out there that still have their natural manes and forelocks.
