Opened in 1972, the city-owned Frank House Municipal Golf Course is one of the few affordable options for golfers in western Jefferson County. It has a long history of providing good value and enjoyable play.

But it has struggled financially in recent years, and in February 2012, longtime pro and operator Lee Harper died, leaving the course in limbo. Now, however, there is a renewed sense of optimism at the club. There’s a new operator, Charles Miller, who says he is making and planning significant improvements. And, he believes Frank House can once again be a draw for people to visit the city.

Miller worked as Harper’s assistant pro for two years and, after Harper’s death, served as golf professional and interim course operator. In January, the Bessemer City Council voted to make him the permanent operator, with the understanding that he would work toward financial sustainability.

He plans to introduce a player’s card for discounts on food and beverages, offer a cart share program, improve the clubhouse restrooms, add a snack bar and more. He also hopes to bring back the recurring golf tournament and hold regular junior golf days for kids.

Located west of Birmingham, the city-owned Frank House Golf Course is a public golf course with 18 holes in total. Its rolling hills and trees create a scenic course that’s enjoyable for all levels of golfers. Its Bermuda grass greens are moderately sized, and the course’s layout includes several water hazards. Its driving range is located in the northeast corner of the facility.
