American Horse Publications (AHP) is a trade association of 85 equine-related magazines, newspapers, tabloids and newsletters with combined circulations exceeding 1,000,000. Members are the communicators for the horse industry, sharing information, images and ideas to build better relationships within the equine world. Membership in AHP is open to all equine-related publications, businesses, professionals, and colleges. The association offers a seminar each year to help with educational opportunities and announcement of the AHP Equine Media Awards.

AHP’s Annual Awards Contest recognizes exemplary articles published in member publications during the previous year. The 2021 competition drew entries from 105 members covering every facet of the equine industry. The coveted General Excellence award went to Quarter Horse News, a biweekly tabloid magazine that covers the cutting and reined cow horse industries published by Cowboy Publishing Group. Honorable mention in the General Excellence category was also awarded to Trot Magazine, a national harness racing newsweekly.

The Merial Human-Animal Bond Award was presented for the tenth year. This award class honors an article that best reflects and promotes the strengthening of the human-animal relationship. The winner received a special engraved trophy from Merial and the member publication was given first right of refusal to publish the winning article.

Horse Illustrated’s story of “100 Horses in History-True Stories of Horses Who Shaped Our World” is an outstanding example. It reveals the lives of the horses who have helped humanity along its path, including Secretariat, the Triple Crown-winning Thoroughbred juggernaut; Black Joe, the riderless army horse that escorted President John F. Kennedy to Arlington National Cemetery; Babe, the high-diving mare; and many more equine icons whose contributions have made a difference in our lives.

In Stride magazine earned the General Excellence award in the Single Issue or Multi-Issue Electronic Publication category for its series of articles on developing systems that can improve time spent in the saddle and barn. The May 2022 digital-only special issue was edited by Tricia Booker and designed by Michelle Miller.

EG Media is the publisher of Horse Illustrated and Young Rider, North America’s leading horse magazines for all horse lovers, featuring expert horse care and health advice, training tips, breed profiles, new products and entertaining reads about life with horses. The two titles are available at newsstands and tack shops across the country.
